WOMEN'S CONCERNS COMMITTEE
The Women's Concerns Committee believes that women and men can work
together to proclaim the good News of Christ's power to liberate us
from gender sins so that we are free to bless one another and bless
our children. We therefore seek to raise awareness about and help to
remove those obstacles that stand in the way of wholeness for women and men.
We trust that these efforts will promote healing relationships between
the sexes, both adult and child.
We work to promote the equal valuing
of children, men and women in the family, church, society and the world.
Accordingly, we are building a network of people with similar concerns in
MCC-supporting congregations in BC. We are addressing issues of violence
against children, women and men.
Through the Women in Ministry Subcommittee we seek to facilitate the
experience of God in an integrated way and to broaden the scope of
inclusivity in our churches.
Highlights of 1998-1999
- In March, the Women in Ministry Subcommittee produced their third conference
at Emmanuel Mennonite Church in Abbotsford. Dr. Maxine Hancock of Regent
College taught the participants about hermeneutic principles. She gathered
difficult New Testament passages under Christ's over-arching rainbow of
Grace. Fifteen more women joined our Network.
- With the help of Angela Janzen, CMBC graduate on summer VS placement,
we organized a September consultation of trained, experienced Christian
resource persons to whom pastors could refer a case of domestic violence
or sexual abuse within their congregations.
- With Women's Concerns congregational liaison persons, we solicited feedback
on Women's Concerns Report issue by issue and forwarded to Gwen Groff in
Akron. With Christians for Biblical Equality, we sponsored Dr. Catherine
Clark Kroeger's well-attended January seminar on "Freedom to
Serve-Rethinking I Timothy 2:11-15 in Light of Ancient Evidence".
- Published another issue of Sisterspeak in June.
