HIV / AIDS Education

MCC BC HIV/AIDS Education program seeks to support people who are infected with HIV/AIDS by loving and serving them "In the Name of Christ". This program also seeks to educate both the public and the church about HIV/AIDS and how it affects those who are infected and those who support them. AIDS continues to be a challenge to the church. Within the community, agencies such as public health and mental health, pastors and counsellors are calling MCC BC for support for people infected with HIV. It is a privilege to be able to receive their calls, as a Christian agency, and refer them to those experts who can help.

Highlights:

  • "HIV/AIDS: Stories of God’s Grace" featured people infected and affected by HIV, telling stories of God’s grace in their lives. Dr. James Hyde, Christian psychologist and professor at University of Louisville Medical School, provided a strong challenge and reason for being involved in AIDS ministries. Rita Loewen provided a strong basis for prevention, the spread of HIV, and medical information. Workshops allowed people to learn more about their particular interests. These included sessions on grief, community challenges, family issues, and the international situation. It was evident that God was present among us, as Dr. Hyde invited us to gather around those infected and closely affected by the disease, to receive our love and blessings.
  • The group Christians in Aids continues to provide strong support for those of us involved in this ministry. Three members are HIV+, and it is by the grace of God that they are all doing so well. For two members, the new medications have brought new vigour and health.

H. Ruth Thiessen
